Expert Lawn Care Services in Maine: TruGreen Bangor

The cornerstone of every healthy lawn — science-driven fertilization and weed control, tailored to Maine.

Maine gives lawns about five good growing months, then buries them in snow. Our lawn care programs are timed to that short season — feeding, weed control, grub prevention, lime and aeration delivered by a locally owned TruGreen team that has worked Bangor-area lawns since 1996.

Most of the lawns we see around Penobscot County are cool-season blends of Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue and perennial ryegrass growing in naturally acidic soil. They green up late, take a beating from snow mold and road salt, then get hit with crabgrass, grubs and dry spells in July and August. A lawn program that works in Connecticut or New Jersey doesn’t fit here. Ours is built around Maine’s calendar.

Two Ways to Start

Complete Care Program

For lawns that need to be built up, our Complete Care Program covers the whole year:

Custom Care Program

Already have a lawn you’ve been feeding and want to keep it going? We’ll build a custom fertilizer, weed and insect plan around what your lawn actually needs — no services you don’t.

What a Season With Us Looks Like

  1. Early spring (April–May): Once the snow is gone we feed for green-up and lay down pre-emergent crabgrass control before soil temperatures climb. We also look for snow mold damage left over from winter.
  2. Late spring (May–June): Broadleaf weed control for dandelions, clover and plantain, plus the preventive grub application before beetles lay eggs.
  3. Summer (July–August): Balanced feeding that won’t push stressed turf during heat and dry spells, with spot treatment of summer weeds.
  4. Late summer (mid-August–September): Aeration and overseeding during UMaine Extension’s recommended seeding window of August 15 to September 15.
  5. Fall (October–November): Lime to raise soil pH and a late-season feeding that builds roots for winter and an earlier spring green-up.

Visits come every 4–6 weeks. After each one your technician leaves a service summary with what was applied and what to do between visits — usually mowing height and watering tips.

Why Bangor Homeowners Pick a Local TruGreen

  • Locally owned since 1996. Our office and crews are based right here in Hermon, so you’re working with people who know Penobscot County lawns.
  • Maine-specific timing. Applications follow soil temperature and our actual season, not a national schedule.
  • Healthy Lawn Analysis®. Every new customer gets an evaluation of grass type, soil, sun and usage before we recommend anything.
  • The TruGreen Guarantee. If something isn’t right between visits, we come back at no extra cost.

Signs Your Lawn Needs a Program

  • Thin, patchy turf that never fully fills in after winter
  • Moss showing up in shady or acidic areas
  • Crabgrass taking over the edges by July
  • Brown patches in late August that peel back like carpet (often grubs)
  • Weeds coming back no matter how often you pull them

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start lawn care in Maine?

Early spring, as soon as the snow melts and the ground firms up — usually April around Bangor. That first visit gets crabgrass pre-emergent down on time. That said, you can start any time during the season; we’ll build your plan around where your lawn is now.

How often will you visit?

About every 4–6 weeks from spring through late fall, depending on your program. You’ll get a service summary after each visit.

Are your treatments safe for kids and pets?

Your technician will tell you how long to stay off the lawn after each application — typically until the product has dried. We follow all label directions and Maine Board of Pesticides Control requirements.

Do I still need to mow and water?

Yes. Mow high (around 3 inches) and water deeply about once a week during dry spells. Mowing and watering do as much for a Maine lawn as anything we apply.

What if I’m not happy with the results?

Call us. Under the TruGreen Guarantee we’ll come back between scheduled visits and re-treat at no additional cost.
