Grubs are the C-shaped white larvae of beetles — mainly Japanese beetles and European chafers in our part of Maine. Adults lay eggs in sunny, well-watered lawns in early summer. The grubs hatch, feed on grass roots through August and September, then move deeper for winter and come back up to feed again in spring. By the time you see brown patches, most of the damage is done. Skunks, crows and raccoons tearing up the lawn to eat grubs usually finish the job.

Preventive Grub Control: Stop Them Before They Hatch

We apply a preventive grub treatment in late spring to early summer, timed just before egg-hatching season. After application it needs to be watered in so it moves down to the root zone, where it stays active through the season and controls young grubs before they can feed.

Fixing a grub infestation after the fact costs far more than preventing it — you’re paying for the treatment plus new seed and a season of recovery. Prevention is the cheaper path.

Signs You Have Grubs

• Irregular brown patches in late summer or early fall that don’t green up with water
• Turf that lifts easily, like loose carpet, because roots are gone
• Skunks, raccoons or crows digging in the lawn at night or early morning

• More than about 5–10 grubs per square foot when you peel back the turf
