Most Maine soils are naturally acidic. When pH drops too low, grass can’t take up the nutrients it needs — no matter how much fertilizer goes down. Lime and soil amendments fix the foundation your lawn grows in.
Rain, snowmelt and our native soils all push pH down over time. Moss creeping in, grass that stays pale after feeding, and weeds that thrive in poor soil are common signs. UMaine Cooperative Extension recommends lime to raise lawn soil pH to an optimum of about 6.0–6.2, applied based on a soil test.

What Our Soil Service Includes
- Soil evaluation as part of your Healthy Lawn Analysis®
- Fall lime application to gradually raise pH — included in our Complete Care Program
- Soil amendments as needed to improve nutrient balance and soil structure
- Ongoing monitoring so we adjust year over year
Why Fall Lime?
Lime works slowly. Applying it in fall gives freeze-thaw cycles, rain and snowmelt all winter to work it into the soil, so your lawn starts spring with better pH. Pairing lime with core aeration helps it move into the root zone faster.
Signs Your Soil Is Too Acidic
- Moss spreading in lawn areas
- Grass that stays pale or thin despite fertilizing
- Weeds like sorrel and plantain taking over
- Slow recovery from winter or summer stress
Want a Lab Soil Test?
The Maine Soil Testing Service at UMaine offers home soil tests, with kits available through UMaine Extension county offices. If you have results, share them with your technician and we’ll build your plan around them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pH should my lawn be?
UMaine Cooperative Extension recommends an optimum of about 6.0–6.2 for Maine lawns.
How often should I lime my lawn?
It depends on your soil. Many Maine lawns benefit from annual fall lime; a soil test is the best guide.
Will lime get rid of moss?
Raising pH makes conditions less favorable for moss and better for grass, but shade and drainage also play a role. We’ll look at all three.
Can I apply too much lime?
Yes. Too much raises pH beyond what grass prefers. That’s why we apply based on your soil, not a one-size rate.
